Week 2: Ansonia 54, Sacred Heart 6

The Chargers ran their current unbeaten streak to 30 games last night, as Arkeel Newsome carried nine times for 165 yards and four touchdowns (and had two TD's called back due to penalties). He scored on runs of 10, 55, 29, and 25 yds.

Newsome has now reached 7,000 career rushing yards, he has 7,153 yards for his career. He now needs 1,127yards to break the all-time CT state record currently held by Alex Thomas

Ansonia Beats Torrington in 2013 Season Opener

The Ansonia Chargers beat the Torrington Red Raiders 52-7 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.

Senior Arkeel Newsome led the way, rushing 10 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns - all in the first quarter. In all, the Chargers had three players rush for over 100 yards during the game. SophomoresTajik Bagley (12 carries, 118 yards and 2 touchdowns), and Tyler Bailey (15 carries, 132 yards, and a touchdown).

Sophomore WIlliam Phipps and Senior Saiheed Sanders also scored for the Chargers.

Joseph E. Potter Memorial Fund

Joseph Edward Potter, 49, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2011. He was the dearest son of Sophie Potter and the late Laurence E. Potter. A graduate of Ansonia High School, Joe went on to Brown University where he excelled as quarterback on the football team, and graduated with a degree in economics. He went on to receive a master's degree in business administration from the University of California-Los Angeles. After a long career in finance in California and New York City, Joe returned to Fairfield University where he earned a degree in education.

New Haven Register All-State

2011 Class M Championship: Ansonia 38 Ledyard 0

The Ansonia Chargers won their 17th State Title! The Chargers defeated the Ledyard Colonels, 38-0, at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.


2011 Class M Semifinals: Ansonia 48 Berlin 14

The #1-seeded Chargers topped the #4 seed Berlin Redcoats, 48-14, in a dominating performance at Sheehan High School in Wallingford.

Ansonia was led by sophomore RB Arkeel Newsome, who rushed for six touchdowns in the contest.

2011 Class M Quarterfinals: Ansonia 35 Bethel 6

Ansonia wins the Class M Quarterfinal at Jarvis Stadium in dominating fashion, 35-6.

Arkeel Newsome rushed for three touchdowns. Elliot Chudwick threw a 10-yard TD pass to Jake LaRovera and Tyler Lester rushed for a 10-yard touchdown.

The Chargers will face Berlin (10-1) on Saturday, December 3rd at 2 p.m. at Sheehan High School in Wallingford.

Thanksgiving: Ansonia 49 Naugatuck 14

Ansonia improved to 11-0 with a win over Naugatuck on Thanksgiving morning at Naugatuck HS.

2011 NVL Football Champions!

The Chargers are the 2011 Naugatuck Valley League Champions!

Ansonia jumped to a 14-0 first-half lead over Holy Cross (8-2, 6-0) en-route to a 33-0 victory over the Crusaders. The Chargers were led by Arkeel Newsome on offense, who rushed for five touchdowns, and Tyler Wood on defense, who had many tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery.

Elliot Chudwick went 4-5 for 64 yards passing while Newsome carried the ball 36 times for 293 yards on the ground.

Week 9: Ansonia 51 Wilby 22

The Chargers are now 9-0 overall, 6-0 in the NVL Brass, with a 51-22 win over the Wilby Wildcats.

Ansonia led 32-0 after one quarter of play. Sophomore RB Arkeel Newsome had five touchdowns for Ansonia (3 rushing: 56, 7, 14 yards; 1 receiving: 35 yards; 1 punt return: 69 yards).

Week 8: Ansonia 48 Wolcott 14

Ansonia captured the 2011 NVL Brass Division title with a 48-14 win over the Wolcott Eagles at Joe Monroe Field on November 4th.

The Chargers were once again led by sophomore RB Arkeel Newsome. Newsome ran for five touchdowns and tossed a touchdown to junior WR Andrew Matos. Jai'Quan McKnight also scored on a touchdown run for the Chargers.

Week 7: Ansonia 42 Crosby 6

The Chargers are now 7-0 after a 42-6 win over the Crosby Bulldogs. Ansonia was led by sophomore RB Arkeel Newsome who contributed with 118 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Senior QB Elliot Chudwick threw for 130 yards including a touchdown pass to junior WR Andrew Matos. Tyler Lester also tossed a touchdown pass to Jake LaRovera.

Sean Rowley had a 3-yard touchdown run for the Chargers.

Week 6: Ansonia 51 Watertown 14

Watertown scored the first touchdown of the contest and soon thereafter, the Chargers began the scoring barrage as they scored four touchdowns in the first half en-route to a 51-14 win at Jarvis Stadium. Arkeel Newsome rushed 15 times for 84 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half.

Senior QB Elliot Chudwick was 4-for-6 for 108 yards. Chudwick tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Raeshawn Finney and hit Andrew Matos down the middle for a big gain.

Week 5: Ansonia 41 Seymour 6

After falling behind, 6-0, early in the first quarter, the Chargers are now 5-0, 2-0 with a 41-6 win at DeBarber Field over the Seymour Wildcats (3-2, 0-2). Arkeel Newsome rushed 17 times for 352 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Elliot Chudwick tossed a 33-yard pass to Newsome for a touchdown. Tyler Lester also contributed with a 75-yard run for touchdown.

Week 4: Ansonia 45 Holy Cross 13

The Chargers are now 4-0 overall, 1-0 in the NVL Brass with a win over visiting Holy Cross (3-1, 1-0). The Crusaders managed to get on the scoreboard first and led the Chargers 7-0 early in the first quarter. Ansonia responded with 45-unanswered points and cruised to a 45-13 victory.

Connecticut Post Male Athlete of the Week - Arkeel Newsome

A week in the life: Rushed 22 times for 401 yards and four touchdowns and scored a touchdown on a 75-yard screen pass in a 55-19 win over rival Derby.

The big picture: Ansonia (3-0) hosts Holy Cross (3-0) on Friday at 7.

The Chargers defeat the Derby Red Raiders by a score of 55-19 behind sophomore RB Arkeel Newsome's 22 carries for 401 yards and 5 TDs (4 rushing, 1 receiving). Arkeel rushed 22 times for 401 yards.

Quarterback Elliot Chudwick tossed three TDs.

Week 1: Ansonia 49 Torrington 20

The Ansonia Chargers defeated the Torrington Red Raiders by a final of 49-20 at Jarvis Stadium on Sept. 15, 2011.

Big Blue was led by sophomore running back Arkeel Newsome, who carried the ball 24 times for 319 yards and six touchdowns. Tyler Lester also added a rushing touchdown for the Chargers.

We Remember Allan Webb & Joe Potter

Two members of the Ansonia Football Family have left us.

Allan R. Webb, son of the late Reed and Katherine Webb passed away on July 18, 2011 at the age 80. “Webber” as his friends and family referred to him was born in Washington D.C.

He later moved to Connecticut where he was raised and graduated from Arnold College.

As a former professional football player, Allan played for the New York Giants. Following his playing career he continued on with the Giants as an assistant coach under the direction of his close friend John E. McVay.

Mike Parks rushed for 122 yards. Gary Eaton rushed for 57 yards and Mark Goumas added 26 yards and a rushing touchdown. George Hokanson had an interception and a fumble recovery which led to 2 Ansonia scores.

Ansonia 28 Naugatuck 8
Fran Hendricks ran for 96 yards and three touchdowns. He also added a punt return for another score.

Ansonia on Traditions TV

Ansonia Football was featured on a television show on Sports New York (SNY) called Traditions. The Traditions crew filmed the Chargers as they practiced leading up to the game versus Watertown. Past and present coaches and players were also interviewed.
